Why experts urgently want the Callide Power Station back online
Queenslanders are encouraged to shop around for the best electricity deals ahead of an inevitable rise this winter.
Both gas and electricity prices are expected to soar amid major nationwide supply shocks, piling on to other cost-of-living pressures.
The country’s state, territory and federal ministers are due to meet on Wednesday to address the issue, expected to prioritise the manufacturing sector.
The Grattan Institute’s Energy Program Director Tony Wood told Neil Breen a change of federal leadership, ageing coal-fired power stations and depleting gas supply have created a perfect storm for energy prices.
“One of the Queensland power stations, for example, in Central Queensland, had a big explosion last year,” Mr Wood continued. “It’s still offline.
“Hopefully, the coal-fired power stations, which are offline, will gradually come back online.
“That will make a big difference to getting the electricity system under control again.”
