Road Safety on Easter Weekend

David Berthon

I spoke last Sunday about this year’s growing road toll – 93 total to Wed, 25 more than last year. Understandably, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian made a heartfelt plea this week for motorists to slow down this Easter, as she said, Crashes don’t just impact the drivers or motorists involved they tear families apart.” This week the N.S.W Centre for Road Safety announced it was giving 1000 drivers under the age of 25 in Western Sydney $100 each to let the Government install technology in their cars that will monitor their speed and braking behaviour. In my book it should extend to a wider range of drivers. For example, of the 93 killed 22 were aged 17 – 25, 20 were 26 to 39, 20 were 40 to 59 and 20, 60 to 79. A fairly even split in age groups – yes, young drivers can definitely be a problem but older motorists also figure highly in our road death statistics.
