Mystery lights over Eastern Australia

Mike Jeffreys

Following numerous calls from perplexed listeners from Canberra to Cairns, Michael chats with Glen Nagle from the CSIRO NASA tracking station, to explain the cause of the lights seen over eastern Australia yesterday morning.

Described as looking like a train of lights streaking across the sky, the sight made people stop in their tracks, though it turns out to be not so much of a mystery to regular stargazers.

Since 2019, Elon Musk’s SpaceX company has launched around 1,200 mass-produced small satellites in low Earth orbit to make up ‘Starlink’, which aims to achieve basic global internet coverage by the middle of this year, explains Mr Nagle.
