Haval Jolion S SUV – so much value for money but lacking finesse

David Berthon

Driving the small GWM Haval Jolion SUV today – more specifically, the Jolion S,
the petrol flagship – the 1.5-litre turbo four-cylinder engine gains 20kW more
power, 50Nm more torque and it gains a more refined multi-link rear suspension –
Jolion prices are currently reduced, the S $3,000 more affordable at a sharp $33,990
drive-away. Outstanding value, is very economical, and is a real proposition for young
families. Unfortunately, the drive experience lets the side down, The electronic
throttle response is poorly modulated and far too sensitive from rest. Not linear with
an initial lack of go and then a sudden rush of performance that is tiring and
frankly in reverse it jumps and is downright dangerous in tight parking situations.
Once moving it’s fine, the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is smooth and
responsive. Unfortunately, the Chinese have not learned like the Koreans who on
arrival here in the 80’s used local suspension specialists to fine tune ride and
handling. The suspension tune is underdone so too road noise intrusion – on the
patch quilt M2 motorway I could hardly hear the radio for pitta patta through the
wheel arches. But if you’re limited by budget the Jolion S SUV really is the burger
with the works. Value for money is the story here but performance finesse is not.
