A few road safety tips as you head off for the annual holidays

David Berthon

The annual Xmas holiday break and a long road trip is probably on the agenda.  Here’s few simple tips to make your trip safe. Perhaps the most important is how you manage fatigue.

One of the big killers on our road so it’s important to handle with due care – importantly, head off early morning after a good night’s sleep and a hearty breakfast.

Statistics show your four times more likely to have a fatal crash between the hours of 10pm and dawn when you’re normally sleeping so don’t leave on that long drive after a hard week at work. Carry plenty of water, it’s important to keep hydrated but it also means you’ll have to stop for a toilet break.

Take a 15-minute break every two hours, and make sure you always have an alert front passenger, sleeping passengers in the rear. Simple hints I know but they could save your life.

Remember the old adage – STOP, REVIVE, SURVIVE.
