The Greens have used Canberra’s biggest party as a platform to stage a political protest.

The Midwinter Ball returned to Parliament House last night after a two-year hiatus, with MPs, staffers and journalists copping an invite.

Senator Sarah Hanson-Young and Claudia Perkins, the wife of Greens leader Adam Bandt, attended the black-tie event in gowns emblazoned with anti-fossil fuel phrases.

The stunt comes after US congresswoman Alexandra Orcasio-Cortez used this year’s Met Gala ball in New York to make a statement.
