A desperate dad has chased down a thief who stole his car with his baby girl inside.

At about 9am on Thursday, the man parked his Holden Commodore out the front of a shop at South Lismore on the north coast of New South Wales.

He left his 11-month-old girl inside the vehicle with the engine running and the air-conditioning on as he ducked inside the store.

At the same time, a 25-year-old man allegedly stole a drink from the shop and then jumped inside the Commodore out the front.

He took off with the baby girl still inside.

The father and a witness gave chase in another car, following the Commodore towards the Bruxner Highway.

When the stolen vehicle stopped at a set of traffic lights they parked in front of it.

A passing police officer saw the incident unfolding and tried to gain access to the stolen vehicle.

The alleged thief tried to escape by reversing but slammed into a stationary car.

The officer managed to get into the stolen Commodore and place the 25-year-old man under arrest.

He’s been charged with multiple offences, including driving while disqualified, and been refused bail ahead of his court appearance today.

The baby girl was distressed but unharmed.
