Why the public may get a say on changes to the $5 note

Australians could be given the chance to choose who should be the new face of the $5 note.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers has says the public should be consulted about who they want to see take Queen Elizabeth II’s place.

“When it comes to the $5 note, my personal view is that it shouldn’t be beyond us to consider and to consult on the best way to change the $5 note when that’s necessary,” he said.

“I don’t see a massive rush to change the $5 note, but nor do I think it should be especially controversial for a country like ours to consider and consult on what we want to do with the $5 note going forward.”

There have been calls for it to feature an iconic Australian, rather than King Charles III.
