Why Chinese hackers are posing as Australian media employees

Hackers aligned with the Chinese government have posed as Australian media employees to harvest sensitive national security information.

Defence contractors, manufacturers, universities, government agencies and legal firms across the Asia-Pacific have been targeted in the year-long espionage campaign.

The attacks are designed to steal national security secrets from the military, energy sector and policies on the South China Sea.

Under the phishing scam, hackers send emails in which they claim to be employees of fictional news outlets or real publications.

Recipients are then directed to fake news sites that can transfer a harmful code to their devices, allowing hackers to access technical information about the victim.
