Seniors advocates say there’s no cause for concern over recent changes to the home care packages program.

The federal health department issued a new set of rules in January, clarifying existing exclusions in response to inappropriate claims by providers.

It’s led to concerns that thousands of Australians living on packages will have their benefits shrunk but National Seniors Australia chief advocate Ian Henschke he can’t see an issue.

“I’ve heard of examples where people were getting extensions built on their homes so they could sit outside in the sun,” he said.

“Now, is that really what you should be spending some of the $4.4 billion of taxpayers’ money on? Improving the back deck of a house so someone can sit outside in the sun?”
