‘Where the system collapses’: Where Scott Morrison went ‘horribly wrong’

Neil Breen says Scott Morrison undermined Australia’s Westminster system of politics in appointing himself to portfolios during his prime ministership without telling the parliament.
And he said that’s where the former prime minister went “horribly wrong”.
It was revealed today Mr Morrison appointed himself to five portfolios without the knowledge of most of his Cabinet colleagues.
Neil said that’s when the “system collapses”.
“Now if the prime minister wanted to appointed himself as the co-minister for all of these things, and told everyone and told the public, not many people would have batted an eyelid,” Neil said.
“Scott Morrison has done himself, and the country, and the Westminster system of government, a great disservice.”

Nine News’ national political editor Chris Uhlmann says his actions are hard to fathom.
“This is the problem with secrecy in government, there’s way too much of it, and that is, you do the first thing which is you think it’s for a good reason,” he said.
“And then it becomes a pattern of behaviour and then you see it as a way you can solve a political problem and it’s all done without anyone’s knowledge.
“The thing that this shows us is that it’s high time we had a royal commission into the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and that examines every level of government.”
