Australia has come in as the sixth most generous nation in the world according to the 2017 World Giving Index.

But it may come as a surprise that Australians are giving less to charity.

Deborah Knight speaks with Murray Baird, Acting Commissioner of Australian Charities and Not For Profits Commission about why this might be the happening.

“The charities are getting more in and they are spending more but less of it’s coming from donations.

“Donations are only 7% of all the income a charity receives.

Murray puts the drops in donations down to a lack of disasters.

“If you have a tsunami or a bushfire, giving will go up during that year because people give in crisis.”
