‘We’ve been conned:’ Labor putting Australians at risk, says Peter Dutton

The Labor Party have put Australians at risk by pushing through medevac laws that are allowing “people of bad character” into the country, according to Peter Dutton.

The legislation, passed before the election, allows asylum seekers held in detention to be transferred to Australia if treating doctors deem it necessary.

This week, the Home Affairs Minister blocked a man with a history of violent and manipulative behaviour, including allegations of physical assault against his own children, from entering the country under the laws.

He was due to accompany his daughter, an Iranian asylum seeker who has been approved to travel for psychological assessment.

Mr Dutton tells Ray Hadley these laws are now operating in exactly the way he feared.

“We’ve been conned. We know that there are people here now who’ve come for medical attention, are refusing medical attention, there’s no one in hospital.

“If you’re a people smuggler, why wouldn’t you be marketing this?

“I just can’t believe Labor hasn’t learnt the lesson. They’ve completely lost the plot.”
