Tony Abbott says he has “a duty to speak up” against Malcolm Turnbull’s National Energy Guarantee (NEG).

The former Prime Minister is one of several Coalition MPs threatening to cross the floor and vote against the scheme.

He joins Alan Jones in the studio, fearing a move away from coal-fired energy will destroy Australia’s future.

“It’s very serious Alan because the decisions we make now on energy policy will determine the shape of our economy for decades to come.

“My fear is that we are sleepwalking towards de-industrialising our country and that would be disastrous.

“We don’t need more unreliable power, we need more reliable 24/7 baseload power.

“And that’s why I’ve said, that’s why the National Party is now saying, to the minister and to the Prime Minister, we’ve got to get new coal-fired power into the system if we are going to continue to be a country that makes things.”

Mr Abbott says he’s making his voice heard so voters can still have confidence in the Coalition.

“What I hope I’m doing this morning Alan is reassuring people that there are still members of the government who are fighting to keep their power bills down and fighting to keep their jobs safe.

“I can absolutely understand why people say, ‘oh don’t rock the boat, don’t make life difficult’.

“But in the end, we have a duty to speak up.”

Mr Abbott took a direct shot at his successor, saying Mr Turnbull has always pushed towards renewable energy.

“It’s like the thing has come full circle.

“Back in 2009 Malcolm Turnbull wanted to do a deal with Labor on emissions reduction and here we are, almost a decade later, Malcolm Turnbull wants to do a deal with Labor on emissions reduction.”

Lord Christopher Monckton made a speech back in 2014 warning Malcolm Turnbull would unseat Tony Abbott in his bid to push for renewables.

“You all need to guard Tony Abbott’s back because the Turnbull faction, in conjunction with the UN, will be doing their absolute level best to remove your elected Prime Minister from office before the end of his term.”

The premonition proved to be spot on with Lord Monkton joining Alan once again to explain the motives.

“The degree to which the UN is trying to establish a global government by using the climate as an excuse cannot be underestimated.”
