Two heterosexual men in Ireland have tied the knot in order to avoid inheritance tax on a property.

83-year-old Matt Murphy intends to leave his home to his best mate and career Michael O’Sullivan who is 58.

The pair chose to get married when they discovered how much tax would have to be paid on the house.

Chris Kenny speaks with law lecturer John Littrich about the legal benefits that come with the passing of same-sex marriage in Australia.

“You could be married for 24 hours and bingo you come under the legislation, but you could be living together for several years, and if people don’t accept you’re living in a bona fide domestic relationship, you might not be able to access those rights.”
