Queenslanders are being warned about a new rule coming into effect today that will require drivers to give way to emergency services.

Motorists are being asked to move over and slow down if they see the flashing lights of emergency vehicles, or risk a $432 fine and three demerit points.

It applies for ambulances, police cars and fire trucks, but also tow trucks and other assistance vehicles like RACQ.

Those failing to obey the rules will be hit with a hefty fine and lose three demerit points.

Transport Minister Mark Bailey told Laurel, Gary & Mark it will be up to the driver’s discretion on how the rules are followed.

“The rule is, leave it up to your own judgement about how you do it but you know, basically, the simple thing is to move over and slow down if it’s safe to do so,” he said.

“You should certainly set your speed down a bit and give them a bit of space.”
