Article image for Results are in: Post-budget poll shows mixed results for Malcolm Turnbull

The Prime Minister’s popularity has surged on the back of the latest budget, but the Opposition still retains a slim election-winning lead.

The latest Australian Newspoll shows Malcolm Turnbull has lifted his voter approval rating to its equal-best level since the 2016 election.

  • Preferred PM: Turnbull 46%; Shorten 32%

It is the first major poll since last week’s budget, and a horror week for Mr Shorten over the embarrassing dual citizenship fiasco.

Despite this, Labor retains a two-point lead over the Coalition after preferences.

  • The Coalition trails Labor 51/49 on two-party preferred basis

The poll also shows support for One Nation and the Greens has fallen.

The Coalition has continued a steady rise in its primary vote since February lifting a point to 39 per cent — having hit record lows last year of 33 per cent

Labor’s primary vote also improved a point to 38 per cent
