Not surprisingly, Andrew Constance has backflipped on his decision last November to remove portable warning signs from mobile speed cameras. With the N.S.W. public enduring some of their most difficult times during extensive lockdowns the move to abolish the warning signs showed a lack of sensitivity.  Fine revenue went through the roof reaping the Government a windfall of $21 million dollars.

The Roads Minister made the point this week that with 3.5 drivers caught by the cameras per hour of enforcement in June, compared with 5 drivers per hour in February, the Government was seeing a change in driver behaviour. Sorry Mr. Constance, wrong again, the drop in infringements was due to the huge reduction in traffic volume in the period. He also claimed the unmarked cameras had saved 56 lives when compared with the average from the last three financial years. But this year, 172 have died on N.S.W roads, three more than last year.
