Jim Haynes’ not-so-famous Aussie characters

Clinton Maynard

Aussie historian, author & entertainer Jim Haynes joins Overnight each week for his unique knowledge of the not-so-famous characters from Australia’s history. This week Jim shines the spotlight on Charles Souter – The Poet Time Forgot.

Born in Aberdeen 1864, Charles Souter came to Australia with his family at the age of fourteen.  He returned to Aberdeen to study medicine, then practiced for most of his life in South Australia.

He played the harmonica and flute and composed a number of songs, which were set to music by Edith Harrhy and others. His verse included ballads, sea shanties and war poetry.

In his heyday he was as popular as many of those poets whose names we still remember and revere and whose verse is constantly anthologised and recited and enjoyed. Indeed, he was far more popular than some of them.
