Jim Haynes’ not-so-famous Aussie characters
Aussie historian, author & entertainer Jim Haynes joins Overnight each week for his unique knowledge of the not-so-famous characters from Australia’s history. This week Jim shines the spotlight on Adam Lindsay Gordon – unknowingly quoted by millions
Adam Lindsay Gordon (19 October 1833 – 24 June 1870) was a British-Australian poet, horseman, police officer, politician and was the first Australian poet to gain considerable recognition overseas.
He is remembered by literary historians as the poet who wrote galloping rhymes, like ‘How We Beat The Favourite’, and sentimental verses like ‘The Sick Stockrider’ and inspired Paterson, Lawson, Morant, Ogilvie and a host of other verse writers.
All four poets mentioned said Gordon was their favourite poet and their inspiration, so it is fair to say that Adam Lindsay Gordon is the father of Australian ‘bush’ verse.
