Jaguar’s I-PACE AWD SUV – stunning performer with limitations

As I said earlier Jaguar’s first electric model – the I-PACE AWD SUV is a simply brilliant effort from Britain’s luxury car brand – superb architecture due to not having a conventional engine up front providing a brilliant and innovative cabin – roomy and airy, a clever design and one can see why it took out three categories in the 2019 World Car of the Year awards. As a driver it’s a real surprise, accelerating to 110 km/hour in just 4.8 seconds with that typical electric car feature of max torque from rest really adding appeal, so too the regenerative braking effect of the electric motor on the overrun whilst its charging the battery. It has all the assist features of a standard petrol Jaguar plus more, the ride comfort, steering and braking elements all first class. With a range of 470 kms fully charged it will get most users to and from their work place over a week with any range anxiety – the downside the charging element – I found using a standard power point slow and tedious – 24 hours of charging for 140kms of range. The test i-PACE SE $130,200 and very highly equipped but fitted with nearly $20,000 in optional extras – like many premium importers, they make buying a standard car nearly impossible and it’s a real turn-off. Apart from that, to make this stunning new electric Jaguar practical you need to have an optional fast charger whilst fast charging stations are currently few and far between.
