Germany to shut down all of its coal-fired & nuclear power plants by 2038

Michael McLaren

The was extraordinary news on the energy front yesterday when it was announced by a government-appointed commission that Germany will phase out coal fire & nuclear power plants by 2038.

In a move away from fossil fuels, the plan is to shift to renewable sources of power which made up more than 40 percent of the energy mix last year, beating coal for the first time.

Michael speaks to Mark McCallum, CEO at Coal21 – Low Emission Coal Aust & GM of Climate & Energy at Minerals Council of Australia to find out if this is a viable plan for Germany and could we ever see something similar here in Australia?
