FULL SHOW: Weekends with Carla Bignasca (Filling in for Peter Fegan) – Saturday, 29th June 2024
On the show: Carla Bignasca returns to the chair with plenty of topics to cover. Earlier this week, the two teenagers who attacked rugby union great Toutai Kefu and his family in a horrific home invasion in 2021 were sentenced in the Brisbane Supreme Court – however they both received shortened sentences and no convictions were recorded. Carla questions if the justice system is actually working, and we hear your thoughts.
Acting Assistant Police Commissioner Colin Briggs joins in place of Andrew Massingham for a weekly update on the latest local crime issues and statistics. He also provides comment on the sentencing of the Kefu home invasion perpetrators, as well as an update on Task Force Guardian.
Aspire Retire Financial Services co-founder Olivia Maragna joins for Money Talks, at what is deemed by many to be “Christmas time for accountants”. Olivia discusses how to make lodging your tax return less stressful, the incoming tax changes from July 1 and what you can still do this weekend to put yourself in a better financial position.
For our Local Issues segment, QMUSIC Chief Executive Kris Stewart joins Carla in the wake of Caloundra Music Festival being cancelled indefinitely. Kris explains the issue and the flow on effects this will have on the QLD music sector. Kris also comments on a Nightlife Commissioner role in QLD, and why “we can’t invite the world to Brisbane and ask them to be in bed by 8:00pm”.
Speaking of this, Managing Editor of The Weekend Edition, Chrisanthi Demos, drops by the studio to give us her take on the appointment of a Nightlife Commissioner, as well as a rundown of some exciting upcoming events happening in the river city, including a slew of new establishments opening!
Elsewhere: much has also been made of the release of Julian Assange this week, with the founder of WikiLeaks having been released after almost 2,000 days in isolated incarceration. But what does Assange’s freedom mean for the future of whistleblowing and journalism? Curtin University lecturer Dr Glynn Greensmith joins Carla to share his thoughts on this and how the Wikileaks case is taught to journalism students.
NRMA Insurance Executive General Manager, Luke Gallagher, joins Carla to provide details on how to best prepare for wild weather with their ‘HELP NATION’ program.
PLUS 4BC Sports reporter Sam Leckie covers all the latest from the weekend’s action, and Celebrity chef Adrian ‘Richo’ Richardson shares his rich and warming recipe for Hungarian Goulash with Sour Cream and Chives.
