Chinese plug-in vehicle on the move

David Berthon

Interesting car sales figures out of China show that it is heading for 1 million plug-in vehicle sales this year driven by a host of new models and government regulations to cut emissions. The Chinese plug-in market share is expected to reach around 4 per cent of their total vehicle sales with around 40 manufacturers offering more than 100 electrified models. That compares with just 56 electric models on offer last year. Global plug-in electric vehicle sales are expected to tally 2.1 million this year with Europe the second biggest market at 430,000 and the United States third with 360,000. Two thirds of the global plug-in market is made up with all-electric battery electric vehicles, the remainder plug-in hybrid models. The move to electrification of China’s vehicle fleet has been driven by the need for all brands to reach a certain quota of overall sales. This move has meant Chinese market leaders General Motors and Volkswagen have had to step up to the mark.
