Chinese brand Chery to make a return here next month
Chinese brand Chery looks set to make a return here, relaunching next month
with its small Omoda 5 SUV. Its revival comes after a dismal period between 2011
and 2015 when the cheap and cheerful brand was not well received after poor
safety ratings and an asbestos related parts scare. It will arrive this time under a
factory distribution operation – the Chinese company using its relaunch as a
litmus test for the brand with plans for the company to become a truly global
company. Chery last year sold around 1.23 million vehicles in China, South
Africa, Russia, Egypt, and several South American and Middle Eastern nations.
Its Omoda 5 compact SUV is the company’s latest design, said to be very
comprehensively equipped with safety technology – its success dependent on it
overturning the poor reputation the Chinese company initially gained here. I’m
