Call for voter ID at federal elections
The Hon James McGrath, Liberal Senator for Queensland & Chair of Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters, joins Michael over calls to change electoral laws to force Australians to produce identification before voting in federal elections.
“Every surf, bowls or services club in Australia requires a person to show ID to enter,” says Senator McGrath.
“Yet in Australia we do not treat elections with the same gravity as a visit to a surf club or entering a Brisbane CBD pub after 10pm on a Friday night.”
After the 2016 federal election, 18,343 people were asked to explain why their name had been ticked off more than once. Despite the Australian Federal Police receiving 7743 allegations of voter fraud, only 65 were investigated and not one person was convicted.
