A capsule containing the first sub-surface samples from an asteroid, has been recovered by scientists in Woomera, South Australia. It ends a six-year journey of more than 5 billion kilometres.

The Hayabusa2 spacecraft released the small capsule on Saturday and sent it to Earth to deliver samples from a distant asteroid that could give clues to the origin of the solar system and life on our planet, according to the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).

Glen Nagle from the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex spoke to the Two Murrays about this groundbreaking mission.
