The Federal Liberals say they support recognising Indigenous Australians in the constitution, but won’t back the proposed Voice to Parliament.

The Liberals are putting forward an alternative model for the Voice, which wouldn’t enshrine the advisory body in the constitution.

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton said there needs to be a greater focus on local and regional communities.

Bill McDonald, filling in for Neil Breen, said he agrees with the decision.

Shadow ministers will be bound to the party’s position, but Liberal backbenchers will be allowed to campaign for either side.
