Karl Stefanovic challenges QLD government over the removal of shark drumlines

Karl Stefanovic has questioned the Queensland government after it made the decision to remove shark drumlines.

The state government failed to appeal a federal court decision in favour of The Humane Society International, who claimed drumlines are cruel and ineffective.

Just 24 hours after the ruling, more than 160 shark-control drumlines were removed from 27 beaches between Cairns and Gladstone.

Karl Stefanovic makes the point that The Humane Society International did not ask for the government to remove the drumlines all together.

Queensland Fisheries Minister Mark Furner tells Karl Stefanovic the court ordered the removal of the drumlines.

“Well, it’s an easy thing to say we didn’t have to remove them but the reality is if we had not complied we would be putting our contractors at risk.

“I’m not bothered what their opinion is of whether we had to remove them or not. The reality is we had to! We had to comply with a court order.”

“It didn’t stipulate for you to remove those drumlines within 24 hours and you did,” Karl shot back.
