Katter Australia Party leader Robbie Katter has backed calls for an independent inquiry into integrity issues plaguing Queensland’s government.

It comes after outgoing Integrity Commissioner Nikola Stepanov announced she was resigning after raising concerns about alleged public service interference into her office.

Just days later, former State Archivist Mike Summerell released a statement scathing of the culture in the public service.

Mr Katter, the MP for Traeger, said he would rather be focussing on other issues.

“Every time the facts get repeated to me, or I read them again, I am so surprised how extraordinary this is,” he told Neil Breen.

“I think the Premier [Annastacia Palaszczuk] was ill-advised, that response on Friday saying, just trust me, and we’ve got things in place.

“That was so ill-advised to say that, if you want to fan the flames.”

He said it was a “punch in the face to the public”.
