Former Australian Cricket Captain Ian Chappell says it’s going to take time for cricketers involved in ball tampering to recover.

“It’s going to take a bit of recovering from this disaster, a disaster of their own making,” he says.

Mr Chappell tells Ross Greenwood, “How the hell they ever thought they were going to get away with it, that also is mind-numbing”.

“It’ll be difficult for Steve Smith. I don’t see any way that he can get the captaincy back, and I think it’ll be hard enough for him as a player.

“It’s a very difficult thing to come back from the accusation of cheating.”

Cricket Australia is also seeking over $1 billion for television rights over the next five years, so the scandal has come at a delicate time.

“I believe Cricket Australia knocked back an offer, what I was told a pretty reasonable offer… they might be regretting that they knocked it back now.”
