How your phone could soon predict shade protection at local parks

Spencer Howson

Finding a playground with ample shade isn’t always a walk in the park, but it could soon be as simple as picking up your phone.

New technology being developed by researchers at the University of Southern Queensland will provide a shade index.

Associate Professor Nathan Downs told Spencer Howson the technology will give an idea of what the UV and shade protection will be for every square metre of playgrounds and parks.

“You can do shade audits at the moment, but they’re rather subjective.

“What we’re trying to do is use artificial intelligence to model the position of the trees and the shade structures and project the position of the sun, so we can know what the shade is for every minute of the year.”
