A demographer says young people are not necessarily left-leaning as a record number of first-time voters are set to vote in the federal election.

Generation Z is expected to make up about 12 per cent of the voting population but there are uncertainties on whether they have added their name to the electoral roll.

Demographer Mark McCrindle tells Luke Grant these voters should not be dismissed.

“We’re talking about a big new group of voters coming in for the first time.

“But while they’re… socially progressive on some of these areas… in the financial area, they’re actually fairly conservative.

“They’re not just leaning to the left, they’re also conservative in some of these economic matters.”
