Government accused of using cover of IR bill to change refugee visa rule

The Coalition has accused the federal government of using its industrial relations bill as a cover for changes to temporary protection visas.
Immigration Minister Andrew Giles announced on Saturday that a ministerial direction effectively prohibiting family reunification for people who sought asylum by sea will be amended.
The federal government will “broaden” its interpretation of what constitutes a compelling or compassionate reason to allow someone with a temporary protection visa to travel.
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton told Ray Hadley said the timing of the announcement was “really interesting”.
“They’ve got the industrial relations debate, which is obviously raging, and … under the cover of that, … they’re going to introduce some regime to allow family repatriations and reunions.
“If they were proud of it, and they wanted to get the message out there, I don’t think they’d be announcing it this week, hoping it’d get buried by all the information and reporting of the industrial relations debate.”
