A consultation tour will be held by the federal government, as one of the first steps towards a referendum on becoming a republic.

Younger Australians, immigrants and people who voted no at the last referendum in 1999 will be canvassed next year.

Nine News political editor Charles Croucher reported Matt Thistlethwaite, the Assistant Minister for the Republic of Australia, will go on the “listening tour” to canvass the views of everyday Australians.
