China ends wargames targeting Taiwan, warns critics of plans to reunify

China is winding down military drills around Taiwan after almost a week, following a visit to Taipei by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
In a major escalation of tensions, Beijing sent military ships and warplanes across the median line that separates Taiwan and China.
The state’s People’s Liberation Army says it has achieved its target of sending a warning to those who recognise Taiwan as a sovereign state.
It comes after a number of nations, including Australia, the US and Japan, condemned the drills, which disrupted flights and shipping in the region.
China’s ambassador to Australia yesterday said China is “ready to use all necessary means” to reunify Taiwan with “the motherland” during an address at National Press Club.
