Centuries-old headstone of fallen officer to be restored

The headstone of a constable who died in the 19th century will be restored, thanks to the investigative work of a local officer.
A recent search led to the discovery of a Parramatta grave where Benjamin Ratty, a convict-turned-officer, was buried in 1826.
It’s believed to be the third-oldest police grave in Australia and is situated in Australia’s oldest surviving cemetery.
The restoration will be unveiled with the attendance of the NSW Police Commissioner as part of Police Remembrance Day on September 29, 2022.
“I’m told this was the first constable to lose his life in the execution of duty and that was back on October 7, 1826,” Ray Hadley said.
