Birdsville Races get back on track after soggy, washed out first day

neil breen

In scenes reminiscent of Splendour in the Grass in Byron Bay, rain has caused chaos at the Birdsville Races in outback Queensland.

The town copped three times its average September rainfall.

It forced organisers to cancel today’s races due to a soggy track.

But the races will go ahead tomorrow, and Friday’s races will instead be held on Sunday.

Birdsville Hotel manager Ben Fullager said the pub was pretty busy, after the races were cancelled.

He told Neil Breen on Brisbane Live it was muddy and horrible yesterday.

“But the sun is out, and it’s drying a lot quicker than we expected.”
