Carers, students and young Australians are set to get the biggest boost to their welfare payments in decades.

Indexation will be increased by 6.1 per cent on January 1 for people receiving the Youth Allowance, Austudy and carer payments.

Social Services Minister Amanda Rishworth said the increase would help lessen the strain of increasing living costs.

Carers will get an extra $8.30 every fortnight, while young people will see a boost of up to $41.

Other payments, including adult pensions and JobSeeker are indexed at later dates in the year, the government said in a release.
