Tony Abbott                 June 28 2017

Well, Tony Abbott delivered an important blueprint for political change yesterday

Addressing a meeting of the Institute of Public Affairs in Brisbane last night, he called for the Renewable Energy Target to be frozen at 15%, for a moratorium on all new wind farms, for temporary cuts to immigration to put downward pressure on property prices and for bans on all new spending other than on Defence and infrastructure

He also called on the Government to build a new coal-fired power station and to hold a referendum to change the constitution to break deadlocks with the Senate

This is Tony Abbott’s clearest statement since losing the leadership of an alternative conservative vision for Australia

Under Mr Abbott’s proposed constitutional changes, which were 1st floated by the Howard Government in 2003, there would be an immediate joint sitting, in circumstances where the Senate refuses to pass Government legislation, to resolve deadlocked issues without the need for a double dissolution election

Tony Abbott says, rightly, that the Senate has “ceased being a house of review and become a house of rejection” denying Governments the right to implement their election platforms

Mr Abbott told his audience last night that the Coalition can only win the next election if it draws up new political battlelines that will give conservative voters something to fight for

He added that Australia is “not working as it should” and “we are letting ourselves down”
