Latest: Toombul traders react to rescue package relief

The boss of property developer Mirvac has announced the company will pay three months’ rent for displaced retailers at the Toombul Shopping Centre.
Retailers and business operators have been left devastated by the decision to close the much-loved centre after the of the February floods.
In a statement this afternoon, CEO Susan Lloyd-Hurwitz says she intends to meet with retailers personally and announced a support package for operators of three months’ rent.
It comes after an earlier meeting with executives and local MPs was canned at the last minute.

One of the retailers, Function Well gym owner Darren Bain, says it’s a step in the right direction.
“But it’s by no means enough, at last here’s some acknowledgement there and let’s hope it leads to some further support,” he told Scott Emerson.
He says he’s not ungrateful but the package doesn’t “scratch the surface” of the debt many face.
While it opens the door to further discussions, he says they would have welcomed the communication months ago.
As a small family business, he says they have been left gutted and in huge amounts of debt.
“Their decision to terminate our leases leaves us with nothing but debt.”
