130 police back to their roles as border checkpoints come down

Scott Emerson

Border checkpoints and airport checks for interstate travellers will be scrapped this weekend, with frontline police manning the border to return to their regular jobs.

President of the Queensland Police Union, Ian Leavers, said around 130 police will be back to their roles in the force.

“COVID isn’t going away, we have many other issues facing us at this point in time,” he told Scott Emerson.

“We will no longer be on the borders, that is really good news.

“We have turned around more than 35,000 [people].”

He said it was hard to quantify the impact on crime, with fewer police on the beat.
