Workplace leaders are urged to develop their support systems for employees suffering from domestic and family violence this White Ribbon Day.

DFV survivor Jo Mason told Sofie Formica the workplace plays “an essential role” in how women cope with difficult home lives.

“Unfortunately for me, I turned to my workplace for support and they just didn’t understand DFV.

“In fact, their lack of understanding almost made things worse, so sadly in my situation four weeks after I left my DV situation, I also left my job and my career fell off a cliff face.”

Ms Mason said workplaces have the potential to rebuild women’s confidence and create meaningful change.

“A workplace that stands up and addresses domestic violence properly … is less likely to see those impacts of absenteeism and presenteeism and they’re more likely to hold onto those valuable members of staff.”

If you or someone you know is impacted by domestic and family violence, support can be accessed by calling the 24-hour hotline 1800RESPECT  (1800 737 732).

If you are in immediate danger, call 000 for police and ambulance services.
