Silent threat? Why anti-violence advocates fear the new Emergency Oz Alert System

The upcoming national “Oz Alert” emergency system is scheduled for a country-wide test next Monday at 2:00PM Sydney time, which will force compatible cell phones and smartwatches to vibrate and sound a 10-second siren even if set to silent.

However, the system faces significant pushback, as the Queensland Fire Department is considering boycotting it due to reliability concerns, and domestic violence advocates warn it could inadvertently put vulnerable victims at risk.
