Why a $56 million splash won’t touch the sides of Qld’s housing crisis

Gary Hardgrave

A $56 million boost is on the way for Queensland’s housing crisis but there’s warnings it won’t go far in keeping people off the streets.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has confirmed $12 million will go toward helping vulnerable residents maintain their tenancies.

The announcement follows a summit that drew people from far and wide to help solve to the state’s lack of housing.

But Real Estate Institute of Queensland CEO Antonia Mercorella told Neil Breen while the additional funding is welcome, the solutions are still quite vague.

“That’s going to be our biggest challenge, Neil,” she said. “We can throw some money at sustaining current tenancies, providing emergency accommodation.

“But what we really need, what we’re facing is a problem where demand is incredibly high and supply isn’t meeting that demand.

“Until we start constructing and developing that housing supply that’s so desperately needed, we won’t be able to make a dent in this issue in a material way, unfortunately.”
