Cooper MP Jonty Bush has opened up about her painful past and what she would like to see for victims of crime in Queensland.

Ms Bush’s father and sister were murdered 20 years ago, in separate incidents.

She told Sofie Formica moving into politics was a national progression with victims of crime, and bringing a voice to those with lived experience remains a high priority.

“For me it was always about how do I bring that lived experience to help shape policy and law reform … what we all want is for what we’ve experienced to not have to happen to someone else.”

New youth justice laws were passed in parliament last night.

She said it’s important to keep looking at the needs of contemporary victims, and how they are being met, or not being met.

“I think the thing I need to convey is, there is a lot of support for victims,” she said.

“I don’t want people to hear me and think I’m suggesting there’s not … where we were 20 years ago is dramatically different to where we are today.

“That said, we can’t sit back and rest and say that everything is fine.”

Moving forward, she wants to hear from victims and their touchpoints with agencies, with police, victims of crime agencies.
