Wellcamp: Why the state’s ‘commercial in confidence’ defence was ditched
The cost of Queensland’s mothballed Toowoomba quarantine hub has been revealed after months of resistance from the state government.
The government consistently refused to outline the full cost of Wellcamp, citing commercial in-confidence arrangements.
But Deputy Premier Steven Miles was yesterday forced to reveal the Wellcamp facility has cost taxpayers more than $220 million.
It came after the acting auditor general, Karen Johnson, on Tuesday said the project was being investigated and suggested commercial in-confidence claims didn’t hold water.
“Commercial in-confidence is generally very important in the negotiation stage, not so much after the contract has been settled,” she told an estimates hearing.
Opposition leader David Crisafulli told Ray Hadley he has no doubt Ms Johnson’s comments caused the state to cave on the matter.
“Commercial in confidence only applies, for goodness’ sake, when you’ve got a competitive tender and there’s something to protect,” he said.
“The only thing the government was protecting was Steven Miles’ idiocy. In the end, they crumbled off the back of that.”
