A dedicated quarantine hub near Toowoomba is being mothballed, with the state government advising it’s no longer required.

Deputy Premier Steven Miles today revealed the Wellcamp facility, known as the Queensland Regional Accommodation Centre, has cost taxpayers over $220 million.

The breakdown of costs includes capital and leasing costs, management, quarantine taskforce costs and the contract to run on-site medical facilities.

Neil Breen said the figures are a set of numbers every “Queenslander should be howling mad about”.

He labelled the dedicated quarantine hub a “stinking white elephant”.

All up 730 people have stayed there in the 5 months since it’s been open.

“What a shameful episode in our political history this whole thing has been,” Neil said.

“How dare the government in a political bun fight with a federal government they loathe waste so much of our money.”

Aspen Medical was awarded a $108 million contract to provide medical services at Wellcamp – $16 million has been spent so far.

Neil revealed he contacted Aspen Medical to see if the contract should be discontinued.

Deputy Opposition Leader Jarrod Bleijie says they have been trying to get the figures from the state government for 12 months.

“Isn’t it outrageous, it’s $237 million for a facility that hardly got used,” he told Neil Breen.

“If you look at it even further and drill it down to the amount of people that have stayed there, that means that it has cost each of those people about $325,00 per person.”
