Tough new penalties for reckless e-scooter riders kick off today

Tough new e-scooter penalties have come into effect in Queensland, as part of a safety crackdown on reckless and dangerous riders.
E-scooter riders caught using their mobile phones in Queensland now face a fine of more than $1000.
A tiered fine system has been introduced for those nabbed speeding with ticket amounts ranging from $143 to $575.
Today reporter Mia Glover said the fines for using a mobile phone, not wearing a helmet and drink-riding have all increased.
“If you are doing more than 30 kilometres/hr on an e-scooter you will be slapped with a $575 fine,” she told Laurel, Gary and Mark.
