Tony Abbott’s surprise response to 31st consecutive Newspoll loss

Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott says the government’s 31st consecutive Newspoll loss is actually a positive.

The coalition narrowed the gap to just two points, trailing 49 – 51 on a two-party-preferred basis.

Mr Abbott tells Ray Hadley the slight bounce shows Malcolm Turnbull is on the right track.

“What it does show Ray is that the next election is winnable and that’s what I’ve always said.

“We need to have a very clear distinction between a coalition government… and a Labor Party which is becoming more and more dominated by the unions.

“If we can focus on that distinction, the election is certainly winnable.”

Mr Abbott also spoke about 56% of Australians surveyed calling for a reduction in our immigration intake.

“People are worried about current record levels of immigration, I don’t think that’s because Australians are anti-immigrant, we’re pro-immigrant.”
